Channelers is a group of sculptures made by Are Mokkelbost. Made from thermo-formed Corian, the designs were originally sketched in paper, by cutting and bending small cut-outs. CHANNELERS

SCULPTURES DERIVED FROM PAPER CUT-OUTS

Channelers is a series of sculptures based on small paper models. Cut and curved by hand, the two-dimensional paper shapes acquire volume and can stand upright in three dimensions. A selection of designs are enlarged in the form of thermoformed Corian®, a solid surface sheet material consisting of 2/3 ground stone and 1/3 acrylic.

The models are re-drawn as vector drawings and milled with a CNC router. The shapes are 120 x 80 cm prior to thermoforming. Edges and surfaces are processed manually with power tools. When heated, the sheets become flexible and are moulded with the aid of custom-built plywood jigs.

As with paper, the sculptures are translucent, allowing some light to pass through.

Made with support from Kulturrådet and Kunsthall Oslo, and great practical aid from Morild Interdesign.

Above: Some shots from the process of manufacturing the sculptures. The routing was done at Fellesverkstedet, and the thermoforming was done at Morild InterDesign in Svelvik, who allowed me to use their workshop for free. Great help was also given by Sebastian Rusten, Helene Duckert and Morten Engebretsen.
