BECCO
INTERIORS AND INTEGRATED ARTWORKS
Becco is a wine bar and concert venue located in Tullinkvartalet in Oslo, in an old, three storey brick building from 1870. It opened in December of 2021, after about a year of renovation in the middle of the pandemic.
The bar was initiated by Flott Gjort A/S, who invited Anne Valeur, my brother Erlend Mokkelbost and myself to help define its concept and identity, including the wine, musical and visual profile. The graphic profile was made by Olssøn Barbieri.
I was involved in the renovation process in close collaboration with KIMA Architects, the entrepreneur Haandverkerne A/S and owner Entra, affecting floor plans, light plans, material selection, color palette, general infrastructure and various customized solutions.
I then designed the interiors in collaboration with carpenter Hans Jacob Normann, upholsterer Nina Hurum, the Oslo Fengsel workshop and others. I built a lot of the smaller furniture and details, and this is an ongoing process. A lot of this, such as the tables, stools and coat hooks, is made from recycled materials pulled from various demolition sites around Oslo.
However, the first task was to design a public artwork on the exterior gable wall, on the invitation of Entra, all which led to the mural relief Tessellators (Vibers).
Similarily, the floor on the ground floor is an integrated artwork made in collaboration with Tron Meyer and produced in cast, natural concrete with green pigment and sliced rocks. The composition was made in response to the floor plan of the ground floor, the sliced rocks being placed in intersecting lines and clusters across the main traffic zones of the space.
Both the gable wall and the cast floor were executed by Haandverkene A/S, with valuable council from Murbyen Oslo, Fellesverkstedet and Betongstudio A/S.
